Eugenie Mayer Bolz Family Spring Concerts: Percussion Ensemble & Concert Orchestra

You are invited to attend the Eugenie Mayer Bolz Family Spring Concerts: Percussion Ensemble & Concert Orchestra! The Percussion Ensemble and Concert Orchestra will perform at the Hamel Music Center on May 18th from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm. This performance will begin with pieces by our Percussion Ensemble. The Concert Orchestra will be performing a World Premiere composition by composer Kevin Day, sponsored by the Andrew George Memorial Fund. Tickets are currently on sale at Campus Arts Ticketing.

Concert Orchestra will perform:

Triumphant March (based on mvmt 3 of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony), arranged by Jim Higgins

Two Waltzes, Op. 39 by Johannes Brahms, orchestrated by N. Clifford Page

Dancing Fire III (for Andrew George), by Kevin Day (World Premiere)

Note about the World Premiere: This new composition was created by Black Composer Kevin Day in honor of WYSO alumnus Andrew George. Mr. Day’s compositions fuse genres such as jazz, contemporary classical, R&B, Soul, and more.

Mr. Day is the recipient of a MacDowell Fellowship for Music Composition, a winner of the BMI Composer Award, the TCU Alumni Outstanding Young Professional Award, a three-time ASCAP Morton Gould Finalist, a finalist for the ABA Sousa-Oswald Award, and a finalist for the NBA Revelli Award. His most recent works include his acclaimed Concerto for Wind Ensemble, as well as a double concerto for trombone and piano entitled Departures, which will be premiered later this year by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Day was born in Charleston, West Virginia and is a native of Arlington, Texas. His father was a prominent hip-hop producer in the late-1980s to early 90s in Southern California, and his mother was a sought-after gospel singer from West Virginia, singing alongside the likes of Mel Torme and Kirk Franklin.

At a Composer Talk on May 17,at 5:00pm at the WYSO Center for Music, Kevin will be sharing his process for composing as well as his musical background. .

The May 18 4:00 concert will be followed by a Partners In Music reception (5:30-6:45) that will honor composer Kevin Day, as well as the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, who will be performing in a side-by-side performance with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the 7:00 Spring Bolz Family Concert.
