Announcing WYSO’s Exceptional Series of Master Classes

WYSO is proud to announce our upcoming Series of Virtual Master Classes, to be taught by some of the top orchestral musicians in the world!

Including six master classes taught by illustrious WYSO alumni, including Vicki Powell (Principal Viola, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic), Kenneth Woods (Conductor, English Symphony Orchestra), Scott Pingel (Principal Bass, San Francisco Symphony),  Sharan Leventhal (Violin, Boston Conservatory), Nancy Goeres (Principal Bassoon, Pittsburgh Symphony) and Derek Powell, (Violin, National Symphony) — the series is sure to be exciting and inspirational as these incredible musicians virtually return to their roots.

Master Classes are funded by the James R Smith Guest Artist Fund

The entire series will feature approximately 20 fabulous professional musicians, representing orchestras both near and far, with instruments including violin, viola, cello, bass, clarinet, trumpet, oboe, and bassoon. Beginning the weekend before Thanksgiving (November 21 and 22) and continuing through April of 2021, the Master Classes will provide an experience for WYSO members unlike any other.

All WYSO members are invited to watch and learn from the classes, however active participation is limited to four Youth /Philharmonia musicians in each Master Class. Interested WYSO members should submit an online application with a link to a 5-minute video, preferably recorded with piano.

Members who would like to observe a master class should watch for a Zoom link in their Member Announcements the week before the Master Class.

During each Zoom Master Class, WYSO will share the student’s recorded video with the virtual audience. The Guest Artist will respond to the recorded performance and continue to work with the member, who will play live via Zoom. Each participating member will have about 30 minutes with the Guest Artist.
