The Impact of Gifts

Providing the gift of music contributes to a lifetime of success.

Recent research has shown the correlation between the study of instrumental music and brain neuroplasticity. The study of instrumental music actually rewires the brains of music students, improving cognitive function that is important for lifelong learning. What shows the most difference  is the actual playing of music: the fine-tuning of finger placements, the repeated practice to improve, the non-verbal communication among musicians playing together.  The impact you make when you give to WYSO is not only on the musical world but also on the students who develop into responsible and contributing members of society.

Here are just a few quotes from parents excerpted from the many letters WYSO receives each year:

I wanted to thank you personally for the astonishing impact WYSO has had on my two sons. Your Scholarship Program and Endangered Instrument series have opened the doors through which they now march – with integrity, self-respect, goals, patience, grace and pride. We will be forever in your debt.

Watching my children learn and grow as musicians was great, but watching them grow as human beings was absolutely incredible. They became life-long friends with people of different cultures and languages.

It’s a joy to see the camaraderie that develops between the students over the years, despite being of various ages, attending different schools, and living across south-central Wisconsin, and to see those who have graduated return as college students to visit their friends and former conductors. From regional to international touring, from a small chamber group to the largest full orchestra, WYSO affords our students incredibly musical opportunities that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

The musical abilities my son gained through WYSO also helped raise the quality of his school music program. He participated in both the band and orchestra throughout high school. During his senior year, he was a teaching assistant for the lower level band at his school. He was also elected band vice-president by his peers for his senior year. The enthusiasm for music fostered by WYSO is truly contagious.
