Join us for two virtual workshops that explore Practice Tips, Tricks & Techniques


These two virtual workshops taught by WYSO Coaches will explore how you can get the most out of the time you spend practicing. Whether you are working on establishing a practice routine or need a change to your current one, these workshops are a great way to learn from professionals! Bring paper and pencil to take notes, and any questions to ask our coaches. Register in advance to receive a Zoom link to attend one or both 45-minute sessions.

Practice Like an Athlete with Lindsay Flowers (oboe)

Do you love sports? Warm-ups, strength training, repetition, scrimmages, mental imagery, studying your opponent. . . Explore how your athletic discipline can inspire your music practicing routine!

The String Player’s Toolbox with Clayton Tillotson (violin)

An introduction to the essential practice strategies taught by renowned violin pedagogue John Kendall, who played a vital role in bringing the Suzuki Method to the United States. Although demonstrated from the view of a string player, these practice techniques can easily be adapted to all instruments.

Break It Down with Melanie de Jesus (viola)

Break it down: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time! In this session we will use fundamental patterns to break challenging passages into “building blocks”  that when reassembled create a more stable technical foundation and a more intuitive musical line.

Mindful Practice with Sarah Gillespie (horn)

Mindful practice is about efficient and gratifying practice. In discussing how we approach practice, speak to ourselves during practice, and how we review our practice, we can become more fluent and emotive performers.
