Chamber Music Camp

Summer is right around the corner. Join WYSO when it is time to pick a summer camp!

WYSO’s Chamber Music Camp is perfect for string and piano players 11-18 years old and open to both WYSO and non-WYSO musicians. You can join camp with a chamber music group you have played with before (a pre-formed group). Or apply as an individual and let WYSO match you with players at your musical level.

Along with the application, applying groups or individuals will submit a screening video. Single applicants will be placed in an ensemble prior to camp, based on space. Repertoire will be determined by the Camp Director in consultation with the coaches. Applications will open on April 1. EXTENDED REGISTRATION DEADLINE: June 15.

The 2021 WYSO Chamber Music Camp offers participants daily small group coaching sessions along with performance seminars. The focus will include selections to be performed as well as general reading. Faculty coaches will include members of the Madison Symphony and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra.

Activities will include:

  • Chamber music repertoire
  • Business and Marketing sessions
  • Master classes and seminars
  • Yoga classes
  • Performances by professional ensembles

The camp is scheduled for July 26—July 30, Monday–Thursday from 9:00 am–2:00 pm, and on Friday from 10:00 am–2:00 pm. Campers will provide their own lunches. The week will culminate in shared performances or a recording project.

This year’s Chamber Music Camp is planned to be in-person at Edgewood College, and will follow all of the safety protocols that have been in place for WYSO’s spring program for string players. As always, WYSO will follow the Public Health Madison and Dane County (PHMDC) protocols for safety. Right now, it is looking very positive for small groups of masked chamber musicians to rehearse together indoors while carefully maintaining social distance. Due to the ever-changing restrictions and guidelines concerning Covid 19, we will be monitoring the situation and will be ready to pivot to remote if necessary. Campers will follow WYSO’s procedures for safe participation in-person, which currently require masks and proper distancing in coaching sessions and all classes.

All applicants will need to provide a link to a video-recording when they fill out the application form to help with placement and the level of planned activities. Visit this YouTube video by conductor Michelle Kaebisch that describes how to create a good video. It will give you ideas and confidence as you set out to create your own recording. For more tips and tricks about recording and submitting your video, visit page three of this document. Please contact with any questions.
