Maureen McCarty

Maureen McCarty started playing the violin in 5th grade strings class at Shorewood Hills elementary school in Madison.  She was a member of WYSO for six years.  Maureen received a BA in violin performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as a student of Vartan Manoogian.  While attending college during spring terms, she performed for five seasons as a musician with American Players Theatre.  After college, Ms. McCarty moved to Spain, joining the Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona (Barcelona City Orchestra) and afterwards, the Orquesta Filharmónica de Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands. She played in Spain professionally for three seasons, and also has performed with various orchestras in five midwestern states, including the Madison Symphony and Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. Maureen received a teaching certificate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and taught strings and general music for students in grades 3-12 in the Oregon and Monona Grove school districts, until her recent retirement. She has been a coach of WYSO chamber ensembles for the past four years.  Currently Maureen has a large private studio of violin and viola students, and tutors Spanish. She has been a member of the Camerata String Quartet since 2001.
